In the United Kingdom, the number of Christenings is steadily falling, but many parents ask for help in welcoming their new children. Humanists Celebrants, such as Richard Aldridge, can design and conduct a non-religious Humanist Naming Ceremony which will have real meaning and provide a wonderful start point for the family.
It also gives the opportunity for relatives or friends to take on that special relationship or responsibility, for which "Godparent" has been the incorrect title for those without religious beliefs. We use the title "Guide Parent" or "Mentor" or "Sponsor" or whatever title you wish. Parents may choose a non-religious Humanist Naming Ceremony because they believe their children should be free to make their own choices about what they believe when they are older.
As with Humanist Weddings, Humanist Naming Ceremonies can be held in any location, indoors or outdoors. Richard Aldridge, Humanist Minister, aims to be inclusive in any Humanist Ceremony, so that those attending who have other beliefs will see the similarities as well as the differences between a Humanist and other Naming Ceremonies.
